2020 was expected to be another great year for the touring industry with major tours from BTS, Elton John, Celine Dion, The Rolling Stones, Def Leppard & Mötley Crüe and Harry Styles expected to gross over 100 million, before the pandemic. Justin Bieber, The Weeknd, Eagles, Garth Brooks and KISS were also expected to make big numbers in the year.
As of February 10, the first update of tickets available for the ‘Map of the Soul’ shows the tour with 31,894 tickets left in 15 stadium-dates in North America, bringing a total of 95.5% percentage sold. BTS was expected to gross massive 110-112 million in 16 shows in the region alone and 215-220 million worldwide.
The highly-anticipated ‘Map of the Soul Tour’ was expected to top the 2020 Year End charts based on 39 stadium-dates announced before the pandemic, followed by Elton John (200-210 million), Celine Dion (190-195 million), The Rolling Stones (160-165 million) and Def Leppard & Mötley Crüe (140-145 million) as the expected top five artists for 2020.
But the first three months of the year were enough to make Queen + Adam Lambert top the chart with 67.5 million from 541,477 tickets sold in 16 shows performed in Oceania and Asia. The band previously ranked at #60 on 2019’s Year End with 45.5 million, making a total of 112.9 million for the ‘Rhapsody Tour’ to date.
Sir Elton John ranks at #2 with 61.9 million earned from 478,340 tickets sold in 25 shows performed in Oceania alone. He previously ranked at #3 on 2019’s Year End with 203.7 million, making a total of 346.8 million for the tour to date. Elton is the top solo artist of 2020.
Celine Dion ranks at #3 with 53.4 million from 307,930 tickets sold in 25 shows performed in North America alone. She previously ranked at #24 on 2019’s Year End with 88.1 million (51.2 million from the ‘Courage Tour’), making a total of 104.6 million for the tour to date. Celine is the top female artist of 2020.
Post Malone ranks at #4 with 39.3 million from 285,698 tickets sold in 22 shows performed in North America. He previously ranked at #21 on 2019’s Year End with 93.2 million (56.8 million from the ‘Runaway Tour’), making a total of 96.0 million for the tour.
Eagles closes the top five with 33.6 million from 129,632 tickets sold in 10 shows performed in North America. The band previously ranked at #37 on 2019’s Year End with 69.7 million (18.7 million from the ‘Hotel California Tour’), making a total of 52.1 million for the tour to date.
Tool ranks at #6 with 27.1 million from 263,611 tickets sold in 22 shows performed in North America and Oceania. The band previously ranked at #53 on 2019’s Year End with 50.6 million (37.6 million from the ‘Fear Inoculum Tour’), making a total of 64.8 million for the tour.
Aventura ranks at #7 with 25.8 million from 188,805 tickets sold in 15 shows performed in North America. The latin group kicked off the ‘Inmortal Tour’ on February 5, at the The Forum, Inglewood, and was expected to earn over 50 million from 32 dates announced. The group was the top non-english language artists of 2020.
TVXQ ranks at #8 with 21.9 million from 235,434 tickets sold in 6 shows performed in Asia alone. The South Korean duo previously ranked at #51 on 2019’s Year End with 51.2 million (33.6 million from the ‘XV Tour’), making a total of 55.4 million for the tour. The duo is the top Asian artist of 2020.
Slipknot ranks at #9 with 19.8 million from 305,931 tickets sold in 28 shows performed in Europe alone. The band kicked off the ‘We Are Not Your Kind Tour’ on January 14, at the 3Arena, Dublin, with 850,265 earned from 12,356 tickets sold. The tour is the highest-grossing concert of 2020 in Europe.
Madonna closes the top ten with 18.1 million from 62,414 tickets sold in 26 shows performed in Europe. She previously ranked at #80 on 2019’s Year End with 33.5 million, making a total of 51.5 million for the ‘Madame X Tour’. She has the highest average price on the list with 289.59 dollars per ticket.
From Queen to Madonna, the top ten combined earned 368.2 million from 2,799,272 tickets sold in 195 shows performed. And the entire list earned 566.6 million from 5,137,387 tickets sold in 373 shows performed.

Virtual Concerts:
BTS ranks at #1 highest-grossing virtual concert of 2020 with the ‘Map of the Soul On:e’. The two-day concert earned massive $47,218,140 (₩54 billion) from 993,000 paid viewers in 191 regions.
The South Korean group played another online event with the ‘Bang Bang Con: The Live show’ and earned $18,276,720 (₩22 billion) from 756,600 paid viewers in 107 countries, bringing a total of $65.5 million revenue from 1,749,600 paid viewers in 2020.
